NEW 21ST CENTURY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY

World-class research-oriented universities play a key role in making remarkable discoveries and developing breakthrough technologies. These discoveries and new technologies need to be translated towards practical use.  Unfortunately, the gap between academia and industry has been deepening and widening, which poses a great dilemma even to leading universities in the U.S.

There are several grand challenges in the 21st century, e.g., energy, environment, food and global health.  In healthcare, new biomedical technologies, ranging from diagnostic and therapeutic devices to bioinformatics and biotechnology, could transform and revolutionize future medicine and healthcare.  Although many pioneering discoveries are being made and new exciting technologies are being developed in academia and research institutes, even the most promising technologies face numerous obstacles in technology commercialization and eventual routine clinical use.  They typically languish and die in the valley of death, frustrating the researchers and angel investors/venture capitalists alike. 

Translational research from lab bench to the marketplace where products and services are provided and consumed is far more difficult and time-consuming than many people estimate or are willing to tolerate.  In spite of this difficulty, academia and industry need to strive to work together with trust and patience and develop a mutually-beneficial relationship.  In this presentation, I will share my experience and observations on the obstacles and formula of success (or failure) in translational research and technology commercialization in science and engineering with several entrepreneurship and technology commercialization examples.
