Jihwan Lee (M.S. Student) Selected for the 2025 Presidential Science Fellowship for Graduate Students.

Jihwan Lee (M.S. student) from the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (advisor: Prof. Wonbin Hong) has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 Presidential Science Fellowship for Graduate Students, jointly administered by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Korea Student Aid Foundation (KOSAF).

The Presidential Science Fellowship is one of the largest national scholarship programs in Korea for graduate students in science and engineering. Each year, the program supports outstanding graduate students who demonstrate strong research capabilities and high potential for future contributions to science and technology. This year, 2,355 applicants across 17 science and engineering fields applied for the fellowship, and Lee was selected as one of the recipients.

Lee’s research focuses on “a multi-focal spatial beamforming system based on a holographic time-reversal mirror.” The study proposes an antenna inverse-design principle, in which the antenna structure is determined based on the electromagnetic response measured at the receiver location, moving beyond conventional forward antenna design approaches.

This technology enables multi-focal spatial beam focusing, allowing beam energy to be concentrated at specific locations depending on the user’s position while enabling precise control of polarization and beam shape. The approach was highly recognized for its technological innovation and potential applications in advanced wireless communication systems.

The award ceremony is scheduled to be held early next year, where recipients will receive a certificate issued in the name of the President of the Republic of Korea, along with a ceremony recognizing and celebrating their research achievements.
