POSTECH PhD Student Receives Honorable Mention at IEEE AP-S/URSI 2023
POSTECH Electrical Engineering PhD candidate Dae-Hyun Kim (advisor: Professor Won-Bin Hong) has received an “Honorable Mention” in the Student Paper Competition at the 2023 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting (IEEE AP-S/URSI). His paper, titled “Dual-polarized Metasurface Unit Cell using a sub-10-μm Thin Liquid Crystal Layer at 38 GHz,” was recognized for its excellence in innovation and academic contribution.
The research proposes a metasurface structure capable of beamforming by utilizing an ultra-thin liquid crystal layer with a thickness significantly smaller than the wavelength, addressing one of the major limitations of liquid crystal-based metasurfaces: response speed. The structure employs strong coupling through complementary patterns, enabling functionality with the ultra-thin liquid crystal layer. Furthermore, by adopting the active matrix driving method commonly used in flat-panel displays, the complexity of control wiring is reduced, allowing for 2D beamforming. The study’s outstanding performance, compared to other research globally, led to its recognition with the “Honorable Mention” award.
The IEEE AP-S/URSI, the largest international symposium in the field of antennas and propagation under the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, was held this year in Portland, USA. The 2023 Student Paper Competition received a total of 221 submissions, and Dae-Hyun Kim’s work stood out to earn an “Honorable Mention.”
