Minsu Jung (M.S. student) from the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (advisor: Prof. Wonbin Hong) received the Best Poster Award at the 2025 Summer Conference of the Korean Institute of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science (KIEES) for his paper titled “Comparative Analysis of Scalar and Tensor Holographic Antennas for K-Band Circularly Polarized CubeSat Applications.”
The paper presents a new approach to address two major challenges in CubeSat antenna design: the SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) constraints of small satellites and the realization of high-gain circular polarization (CP). Compared with conventional isotropic unit-cell structures, the proposed antenna design based on anisotropic surface impedance enables continuous phase control of different polarization components of the electric field.
Through this approach, the study demonstrates that high circular polarization purity and improved beam gain can be achieved even under the strict size and weight limitations of CubeSat platforms.
In addition, the research systematically analyzes the radiation efficiency improvement of tensor holographic antennas in CubeSat applications. The results provide a foundation for potential applications in next-generation satellite communications, remote sensing, and radar systems.
In recognition of its originality and technical significance, the study was selected for the Best Poster Award at the 2025 KIEES Summer Conference.
