Otae Jang (Integrated M.S.–Ph.D. student) from the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (advisor: Prof. Kyungtae Kim) received the Best Paper Award at the 2024 Fall Conference of the Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences (KOSAS) for his presentation titled “A Study on Automatic Target Detection and Recognition Based on SAR Imagery.”

The paper proposes a method for automatic target detection and recognition using data obtained from an imaging radar system. In particular, the study introduces a robust algorithm designed to reliably identify targets even in complex environments with severe background noise interference.

By improving detection and recognition accuracy and enabling stable convergence of the loss function, the proposed method demonstrates a high level of reliability in target estimation. In addition, the effectiveness and applicability of a preprocessing technique for efficient removal of unknown clutter were validated, which was recognized as a key contribution leading to the award.
